Today's Technology... Today by Butch Farley

A joint NASA-Air Force project proposes to launch a "lightcraft" into space by 2025. Carrying 12 people the vehicle would rely on Earth-based

lasers for propulsion. And, this isn't science fiction. Tests conducted at White Sands Missile Range have lofted a small prototype almost 100 feet off the ground.

Butch Farley, Coach U Director of Community Development, is pictured on the right with Vic Tambone, Mallory Tarcher, the daughter of the late Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop.

Butch is a former fighter pilot and Vic an "old" squadron buddy. Both are members of the board of directors for the National Aeronautic Association/Federation Aeronautique.

Butch was in Washington, D.C. for the NAA's Aviation and Aerospace Awards held annually at the National Air and Space Museum Smithsonian Institution. Mallory was the leader of 118 women skydivers, known as Jump for the Cause, in their record breaking "Largest Freefall Formation" feat. The record breaking maneuver was in support of breast cancer resesarch and raised over $1 million.

One of Butch's duties as a board member is the oversight and participation in aerospace and aviation record attempts. Butch is in line to participate in an around-the-world speed record in a B-1 bomber. Asked if he thinks he can sit in one place for 36 hours he replied: "It's a long time but it will be anything but boring!"
