International Coaching Reports (Continued)

Coaching in aruba.

story by Monique Rider

I am a coach in the United States currently coaching a client who lives in Aruba. I have been fortunate enough to break into the market in that country. Aruba, which is only 20 miles long and 6 miles wide, currently has no coaches or media information about this field. The concept is very new to the country.

My client, a fitness manager at one of the resorts, heard about coaching from me. He is interested in becoming a coach and asked me to coach him so he could get a better idea of the concept. It has worked well and he has experienced many shifts and wins over the past few months.

The Arubans are very friendly by nature and conduct most of their business face to face. My friend would actually like to set up his coaching practice within one of the resorts and hold in person coaching sessions with the tourists. My desire is to work out a system where he can then refer his clients on to me, after they leave the island. I can then continue the coaching via telephone.

One challenge I have had, in doing international coaching, is working with someone who has a thick accent. Listening and clarifying become extremely important!! Another issue, sometimes, is the telephone connection. But so far, we have been able to work through these issues. I am very fortunate that Aruba is also on the same time zone as my home state of Michigan!! Having been to Aruba twice, and considering a future move there, coaching this client keeps me connected to the island!

Israel
Live today, you might be dead tomorrow mentality...
makes coaching exciting in Israel.
story by Sara Arbel

Coaching is as new a profession in Israel as in Europe. During the past 10 years the traveling businessmen, and later on, the Internet travelers, have been exposed to Coaching and the concept of Coaching from different angles and methodologies. Since it became a more popular and trendy profession in the U.S., many consultants have changed their professional descriptions on their business- cards to “Coaches” of different fields: insurance coach, financial coach, organizational coach, etc. Some popular retired basketball and football players are coaching businessmen in different fields and present themselves as Business Coaches.

Coach U's methodology is represented in Israel by one and only one coach so far, Sara Arbel, who has been practicing as a full time coach for the past 4 years.

The population that uses coaching in Israel is generally that segment that is very highly educated and is striving for higher achievements in their career and business - businesses that compete with the global market, high tech startups and high-level industries.

But there are many clients that are in transition to a more spiritual path of their lives. Those are the people that need more depth in their everyday stressful lives, those are the ones that look for the deeper meanings of their existence and are in search for their peace, love and gratitude.

Israel is a very young country (53 yrs. young) of small dimensions. You can drive from north to south in 8 hours and from east to west in 3 hours! It has a population of 5.5 million people. A country that during all these years has been developing - as well as defending itself in 7 wars.

The population, mostly of military background (men & women) as well as developers, entrepreneurs, founders, inventors, investors, renovators, ranchers, industrialists, agriculturists – all this makes a wonderful combination of coaching clients that it’s fun to work with.

Add to it a stressful life--a mentality that says: ”Live today, you might be dead tomorrow.” All these make very fascinating coaching clients, and yet quite challenging.
It is a population of 150 different cultures of Jews - that by itself offers a multi-colorful and multicultural coaching experience.

The lifestyle as well as the standard of life are very Americanized, that is the most common denominator, well recognized and followed up. That is where coaching has been picked up as a trendy new package to promote a used product (which makes me very angry).

Personally, I had a few articles about coaching and had two T.V. interviews on two different shows and stations, and am planning for more to come. The response was very warm and provoked many questions.

I am sure that the popularity of Coaching has grown recently. I have been stressing the need for professionalism, and referred many people to the Coach U and ICF websites – useful for those who know English.

I believe that in the coming 5 years, if this country won’t be at war (I hope to God not!), there will be more coaches that will strive for professionalism and the coaching profession will get a more defined and refined recognition. I am doing all that’s in my power for it to be so.
