Coaching is alive and growing in New Zealand

story by Erena Brew and Peter Hrstich

Persistence on the part of New Zealand Coaches has lead to a steady growth in their numbers and a growing interest within the business and private sectors.

There are upwards of a hundred Coaches advertising in the main sources, the Internet, phone directories etc. We estimate that half of this group incorporate coaching as an additional service to their Business consultancy or Therapy.

There is some specialisation where the focus is on Leadership and Business coaching and there has been an increase in Training providers including coaching as a part of their package. Our clients come from a cross section of the population, Project managers, Small business operators, Students, Managers, Homemakers…variety is the spice of life.

New Zealanders have a natural tendency to be skeptical of anything new. We are essentially a conservative society so coaching generally has been regarded with interest but response overall has been guarded. This is reflected also in the media response where interest has been shown but as yet there has been a lack of commitment or vigor. A number of coaches advertise in the print media on a regular basis, primarily this is in the regional papers, and these papers have been willing to provide copy space on a one off basis.

We know of one Franchised Coaching group who promote heavily in the Business magazine category of media, otherwise articles have appeared for interest in Women magazines. There has been some exposure on television again on the level of curiosity for chat/commentary shows; unfortunately the American programs such as 'Oprah', which heavily promote coaching screen here in the afternoons, so are missed by the bulk of the coaching market.

In the 80's New Zealand was a shining light for the "New Right' market driven government policy; the dynamic change experienced as a result of this political perspective has meant that the socio economic divisions between what we colloquially term 'the haves and the have nots' has become more radical and obvious.

Now everyone is working longer hours often without necessarily seeing an advantage in their lifestyle; more people across the economic divide are wanting to review their priorities and achieve greater balance in their lives, a large number are wanting to take greater charge of their working life without the dependency on a volatile labour market while others are wanting to shoot to the top in their careers. We as coaches are conscious of the economic divide and aim to be available to the have nots as much as the haves because while these folk may not have the income source to pay big bucks they are no less deserving of the opportunity for breaking the mould.

It is exciting to be part of the growing Coach community here in New Zealand; in true Kiwi fashion Coaches are persisting and proving how cost effective and efficient having a coach on board is. Increasing numbers of New Zealanders are stepping outside their comfort zone and taking up the opportunity to work with a coach. YES!

Venezuela
Coaching in Venezuela..
story by Linda Mason-Hahn

A developing country, Venezuela covers the full range
of socioeconomic and lifestyle trends, from the impoverished
to the wealthy. An entrepreneurial spirit exists, combined
with a cultural belief that family and relationships come first.

Through writing and technology, I have a global client
base, which includes clients in various Venezuelan regions.
Most of my clients are multi-national expatriates, couples/
partnerships/families/teens, small and corporate businesses,
schools, organizations, and non-profits. The general focus
of our work together includes cross-cultural adjustment and
adaptation, life planning, communications, relationship building and maintenance, organizational structure, team building, and improved customer service.

Public education about coaching is ongoing, as it remains a new service, a new idea, and largely unpublicized in the media. Corporate and individual client response is quite favorable, and interest continues to grow.
